directors commentary script.

Connor: Hello, my name is Connor, and i am the Director for "Bubble Pop". the video, is inspired by the club atmosphere, the drinking, the partying, an teenage laughter.

interviewer: the video looks fantastic. I've got a few questions for you. firstly, what have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Connor: well, when we showed the video to our target audience , i as the director gained a lot of feedback from the audience. this included a insight from the viewers of what they liked about my work and what they didn't like about the concept, narrative and overall presentation. a significant thing i learnt was that my work was incredibly presented as a video and matched the genre of the music as well as the editing which contrasted with the overall performance of the video to achieve the best it could possibly be, however i believe there is room for improvement as i learnt, that some of the shots were edited very fast which some people did not like however majority loved.

interviewer: How Effective is the combination of your media product?

Connor: i think the combination is highly effective. the reasons for this is that alot of work was put into the video to make the editing stand out with the given scenario which was of course a pop, loud and club inspired video. the combination of our video works well together with the magazine advertisement and CD cover as we have influences from the music video which we applied onto the CD cover  and magazine advertisement . we achieved this by working on the editing in photo shop to create a chilled back CD cover with a essence of RnB as a editor and director i had the responsibilities to make sure all the combinations were effective and did work to make the whole package on the whole to work well. the mise-en-scene played a huge part to make the combination work because the video i produced, goes with the style of the CD artwork.

interviewer: wow what great feedback. sHow did you use your technology skills?

Well, we worked with the video on Final-Cut express which made it easy for me to cut, edit, and transform the video to what it is today. I used filters on most of the shots, because i felt they were too dark to begin with. I cut most of the shots, and edited the lip synching to fir the music. i also used Photoshop to edit the magazine Ad and the album artwork. I used effects to make the back and front of the album cover look similar.

Interviewer: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

connor: well, my video, uses similar shots and effects to match the conventions of a normal club video. The video follows the conventions of things such as the mise en scene because it is shot outside a building we used as a club, and shot in a dark room, which follows the conventions of a dark, dance sequence orientated video. The lighting in the video is significant to making the video feel more of a club friendly video, with flashing lights, bright glowing headlights and dance costumes.

Interviewer: thanks for your time, Mr connor lenton

Evaluation

What Have you learnt from your audience feedback?
i feel i have leant that our video works very well, and that the whole sequence works well with the music, and fits into the genre of music. The video is dance orientated, which fits in with the dance feel of the song.
How Effective is the combination of your media product?
The combination works well between the video, the album cover and the magazine add, as the same effects were used on photoshop to mix the video and the artwork. The effects used replicate the darker shots created in the music video.
How did you use your technology skills?
We used photoshop, and  final cut express to edit and create our video. Final cut was used to upload the clips, edit them together, and create our video, by mixing shots, effects and the lip synching to make it work.
in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
our video labels up to the conventions of a normal video because it is dark and suits the song. The video fits into the style of the video and works well with the music to make it seem more realistic.

EVALUATION

Media-Fathima begum

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
As a group we had great feedback from our class. However we also did have small criticism as usual which is normal and also an inspiring thing as it is important to know what your audience think of your work. We learnt that we had to slow it down as it was rather fast for some people however most people argued that was the most significant reason for our video working so well. We also learnt that we used great performance skills however we should have created a storyline of some sort to make it more sensual and maybe appealing. From audience feedback we also learnt that we could of used more colours or people in the video however we dint not take this feedback into consideration as majority of the class mentioned on the whole it looked very good as it is and changing it in any form may break down our theme and main idea of the video.
How effective is the combination of your main product?
The combination of our chosen music and video is very effective as both the music and the performance of the video works well including every beat of the music and every scenario and shot change in our video. It all gelled together and ass a whole it looked professional due to the editing and video filters we chose. It was also effective has we had a lot of performance in our video we also chose a shooting place which was very simple yet effective to work with. This was the dark room. The dark room helped make our video effective as it helped bring in the dark atmosphere and it also helped lighting stand out creating a very sexy vibe which ‘Rihanna’ pulls of in all her videos. We did not want to shoot in a place were it was obvious that we were filming in college as that would break down the imagination of the audience from a studio professional work to college work. We therefore chose the back of our college gym. This helped bring in the combination of the main idea of our product which was a dance pop music video inspired by Rihanna.
How did you use your techno skills?
We used our technological skills in a way most professionals do. This included a high amount of research into the music industry and mainly our music artists ‘Rihanna’ we had to  make sure our work did not look like student work as this would make our video look very cheap and look like we have not put enough effort into we therefore made sure we used filters on our video that were completely tones down in colours contrasting with the hue in the editing and colour balance helped us achieve the overall mellow dark majestic club theme atmosphere which in many cases of videos our artist does have in her videos.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Conventions of real music videos include the use of close up shots of the artist's face.
Other forms are the use of filters when editing the video footage; these filters helped the overall video look more professional.

Digipack

This is our final digipack that is included with our video. Before this we made several alterrations to several images to find the best looking one.

Thursday 17 November 2011

Class Feedback on our video

Once we showed our video to the class, we received feedback. Of the things people commented on, were that the video fitted the song we had. They also said that the effects fitted the song and worked well,  and the filters made the video look more professional. They also said the lip synching worked well, and the cutting of the shots worked well. They also said there was enough footage for it to work well

Editing

we have been editing our practice test footage before our final video. this is so we get a idea on how to edit and how to cut shots and make the shots look continues and appealing to the audience, by editing the footage we could see what parts of the video worked best and which parts didn't. also the test footage almost worked as a template therefore we had a ideal idea o were to place certain shots and scenes that worked well along side the music.

What else needs to be done

  • The completion of the editing process of our video.
  • The digipack including the magazine advert.
  • Group feedback
  • Analysis of digipacks
  • Evaluation of music video

The Day Of Shooting: (Day 1 and Day 2)

On day 1 of shooting we had many responsibilities to fulfill. This included splitting the group into two and taking on responsibilities to ensure the music video shooting was successful. This included two members to go over to the gym and ask for the back doors to be open because we needed the doors to be open to create the back of a club scene.
The other two had to go over to the main hall and ask for permission to use the college hall red carpet poles that are usually seen outside a club when the bouncer lets people in. After being permitted to borrow the ropes we then had to take them over to the gym.

We also had to ask our media teacher to help us by contributing to the scenes, this involved using her car. We needed her to drive up the car to the gym the members of the group had to film the main character coming out of the car and also a car generally pulling up in-front of a club-this was the initial idea we created.

On Day 2 of shooting, we had to go over to the dark room and set up the lights in the dark room. We needed extra people in the video so we asked a few girls in our media class to help out a background dancers to enhance the idea of a girls night out in a club. We shot a verity of shots including close up lip syncing shots and also an over view of a typical scence of a girl dancing with a guy in a club.

Things that went wrong

There was a disaster which we overcame as a team. The incident that happened was the fact that our lights crashed and as a result of this they were not working anymore. We therefore could not shoot our music video on the day we had planned. This resulted in us having to reschedule a new date to film.
We also brought in new lights which were not as good as the previous set however we made use of them in the same way as we previously planned.

Other things that went wrong included costumes, we did not prepare costumes due to a misunderstand of dates. We made use of normal clothing.

Another one of our problems was the lighting during day time shooting. We wanted to create the music video at night as usually and more commonly people go clubbing during late evening. We also needed a car to film this at night, however this backfired and we could not do so as it was not possible. We therefore used our media teacher's car during day time, and luckily the weather was not so bright and looked dull so we decided it wouldn't be so bad to film during the day because we could edit it and create that effect of evening.

We had plans to go to town on a real night out into a real nightclub to do some filming of real life clubbing, however the risk of taking out a college camera on a clubbing night is high, and it's not safe to take out property that is not yours because of the responsibility there is.

A minor problem was that our test footage was not long enough; we did not have enough shots. We learnt from our mistakes and on the real day of shooting we made sure we had more than enough shots just in case we need extra scenes.

planing for the final shoot-general ideas.

We are planning to use disco lights in our music video. The reason for this is that the music is a club based genre and therfore the lights will help emphasize this idea of a club to the audience and target audience which is mainly teens who love to go clubbing and partying.

These are the lights one of the members of our group has. We will use these lights to create a club atmosphere in the darkroom.

The photograph below is a rough idea of the atmosphere we would like to crate with the lights in a dark room.

Feedback for Blog

Coverage Of Posts So Far :

Mosts posts are there on the blog but there are a few that are missing, for example, the analysis of student videos and auteur study and the posts that have the lyrics arent really needed. Storyboards and shot lists arent on the blog aswell so it made it diffuclt to fully understand the concept. Also some posts can be merged together as one post instead of a few.

Quality Of Posts:

The quality of posts is good but some could have a bit more detail. The use of photos in the blog is very good too

Assessment of Ideas So Far :

Its a well used concept in a lot of videos relating to the genre of the song but if you find a way of making it unique and distinctive then it will work.

Advice and Guidance :

Complete the missing blog posts as a few are needed (Storyboards and Shotlists) so that the concept of the video is fully explained.

Mise En Scene Ideas

Costume: we will be using quite provocative costume such as what rihanna wears in her current music videos. e.g. short skirts, dresses, skinny jeans, heels, lots of makeup etc.

Lighting: we will use dark, seductive lighting, mainly either at night or using black out blinds for in the dance studio or black card etc.

Wednesday 28 September 2011

Filters And Effects

Our video will include many different effects, including filters to make the video feel more realistic, and more professional. Because our song is uptempo, we want to include flashing lights, and dimmed lights to make the artists face look better, and more windswept. We will use a fan to make the artist's hair appear swept back, and use effects combined with this to make her look like a glamour model, and more appealing to wide audience.

Things we need:

'Bouncer' : someone beefy.
'DJ' : Georgia?
Loads of people: facebook event?
Nice car and driver: tbc
Lights (differnt colours etc): tbc
Music (someones ipod): anyone
Bubbles? tbc
Fog machine? tbc
Sexy costumes: everyone
Signs: to be made by us in lesson?
Posters?

Shot ideas.

These are a few shot ideas of our locations.

This is the door behind the sports hall- it will be the entrance door to our club as it is easy to pull a car up to it too.

Another shot of the 'entrance' door.

This is the door to the dance studio, there were people in a lesson so we couldnt get a picture of the inside of it. we may consider other lpcations for the dancing though as the floor of the dance studio is quite slippery.

This may be our althernative dance area (without chairs)
There are room dividing curtains to we wouldnt have to get as many people to fill up the 'club'.

There are 'nightclub,' rope thingys in the main hall that we could use outside the 'club,' letting people in with a bouncer.

Maybe a shot on the stairs?

Monday 26 September 2011

More Shots

these shots are also going to be used in our video, featuring various extras and close up shots. They are taken from "On The Floor" by Jennifer Lopez.

Mise En Scene - Shots etc.

This shot taken from Ciara's "Like A Boy" music video, uses this shot a few times throughout. The background of the dance sequence is inspiring because we aim to use a similar dull background for our club scenes. In these scenes, there wont be a choreographed dance sequence but instead just people clubbing.

Editing
For our final video, most of our shots will be edited with effects, because it gives a visual look and it helps to create and improve the atmosphere of the video which then influences the audience to get hooked onto the video and see it in a club perspective. This shot taken from J-Status and Rihannas song "Roll It" has been edited to give a club atmosphere to it, and is influencing what we want to do in our video.

Still Shots

These shots are stills from a recent party we attended, these shots that were taken are inspiring to our video because they replicate what we are trying to achieve in our video.

inspiration

the jay sean 'ride it' video is a huge inspirtation as it contains elements of the type of style we would like to use
it also contains shots and exact angles we have considerd in our video we therfore take jay seans video as a template as the story line of a club scene is similar to ours and leads a similar storyline and narrative just with a change of a female role instead of a male role. here are a few shots we have been inspired by. We will use the exact shots as these and interpret them into our work in our own style.

This is the video the shots are taken from, which includes a club-feel to it which is inspiring to our video.

Classification

After studying the BBFC website, and looking at other related music videos, we have decided that our video for "Bubble Pop" would be classified as a PG, based on the artist "flaunting her body" in the video. We don't think the video should be classified as a 12 or more because there is no sexual, violence or drug related content in the video.

Idears Continued

More ideas we have for our video:

- Our target audience is aimed at the younger clubbing generation ( for Rihanna Bubble Pop)
-Or all ages, but mainly teenagers (Lady Gaga Second Time Around)
-We want our video to look professional, so we will use many different shots, quickly snapping for Rihanna or Slowly for Lady Gaga.

Thursday 22 September 2011

Storyboards

Our plans for when to shoot etc.

We plan to shoot our video on a tuesday between the times of 10:30 and 12:20.
During this time we will film the inside shots, of the dance studio.
We will start getting ready at 9:00, for the video to start filming at about half 10..

We will need:
- to ask to use the dance studio
- Use the speaker in the studio
- Bring an AUX lead to connect an ipod to the speakers
- enough people to film the video to look like a club
- Costumes, people to wear club outfits,
-

Possible shots

Close up of lead singer's face.
Medium shots of lead singer including people dancing.
Long shots of random people dancing and catching bubbles.
Shots of bursting bubbles.
Close ups of high heels.
Medium shots of girls driving car.
Close up of a girl's high heels stepping out of the car.
Shots of 'security guards' at the back doors of Long Road gym.

Mise En Scene

possible costume ideas:

rihaana wears alot of abstract clothing in her videos which shows her style and sense of fashion through her music. she also has vibrant colours used in her videos and example of this is SnM music video. we therefore have decided to use this inspiration and create a whole new look but use the original ideas and make it our own. we therefore will use the similar costumes however we will add our own inspiration to create a refreshing look based on the locations and set designs.
For our final choice we have decided to go with our original second choice of rihanna's "bubble Pop". We have decided to do this song because we have more ideas for it, and we can make the video seem more appealing.  we have also the right plan for the video we have a general idea and focus aim for the video. today we will look at other rihanna videos to enhance her normal style and learn and get influenced from the normal direction of rihanas normal videos. we therefore will gain inspiration to adapt to our own video. here are a few example of rihaanas normal videos however one thing we have learnt is that her video trends have chanaged over the years depending on the youtube of music genre and narrative used in the video

bubble pop, bubble pop, bubble pop,

Don,t you think it strange all the range I,m making up
Sugar, sweetest smack of candy cane melted in your mouth

I got my bubble, yeah, I make my bubble pop

For you I,ll make it pop
For you for you

For you I,ll make it pop

But don,t be afraid of the way I tantalize
Speaky of a touch of my gloss and you can,t speak
pour a glass and I,ll give you some
of my tasty cake you love so much

Lady Gaga lyrics

Oh oh oh yeah
Babe

Last time I thought we had this talk
Boy you were getting ready to leave
I thought that baby you were done
Cause for a while you could barely look at me

This time I thought that we'd be fine
That I'd forget the things that you said
I tried crossing out your words

But baby you can not forget the past
Oh oh oh oh babe
Can not forget the past
Oh oh oh oh, Still baby (Babe)

I'm so unpredictable
You don't know what to think
So unemotional
Wonder if I'm even still in love
You see
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder the second time around

I'm so unpredictable
Just like you used to be
So unemotional
Boy I can't forget the way you were with me
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder
The second time around

The second time around

We tried going back to Joe's
That always was our favourite place
Long rides baby by the coast
Do you remember where we stayed

Last time we where hanging out
You were acting kind of strange
Now it's the second time around
I'm sorry now it's me that feels this way
Oh oh oh oh babe
(My heart just speaks to me)
It's me that feels this way
Oh oh oh babe

I now you are the one that is hurting
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/l/lady_gaga/second_time_around.html ]
I'm so unpredictable
You don't know what to think
So unemotional
Wonder if I'm even still in love
You see
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder the second time around

I'm so unpredictable
Just like you used to be
So unemotional
Boy I can't forget the way you were with me
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder
The second time around

I'm not sure the best way to say this
But I can't pretend to love you no more babe
This ferris wheel's got me crazy
Maybe the second time around is not meant for us babe
Not meant for us babe hey-yeah!

I'm so unpredictable
You don't know what to think
So unemotional
Wonder if I'm even still in love
You see
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder the second time around

I'm so unpredictable
Just like you used to be
So unemotional
Boy I can forget the way you were with me
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder
The second time around

I'm so unpredictable
You don't know what to think
So unemotional
Wonder if I'm even still in love
You see
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder the second time around

I'm so unpredictable
Just like you used to be
So unemotional
Boy I can forget the way you were with me
I don't know what to tell you now
It's always harder
The second time around

More Pitch Ideas

Lady Gaga
Some more ideas to feature in our video include panning shots of the singer in slow verses. These shots would rush past the singers face while still keeping her in the shot.
Our video would be inspired by this video.

Rihanna
We will do a dance sequence for this song with several dancers. This video's dance sequence is inspiring to our video.

Another video which inspires are is this one, as we would film various shots of people at a party and the after-party, drinking, falling over, just the atmosphere at a party. We would create a montage of different shots.

Thursday 15 September 2011

Rihanna- bubble pop song pitch ideas

  • Our initial ideas for our second choice of Rihanna Bubble Pop, include shots in a club, people drinking, throwing up, falling over, and having a good time.
  • This screen shot from rihannas song don't stop the music is our inspiration for our video.

  • some other idea's for the video would include close ups shots of the singer and Fatihma as the lead singer. The other members of the group would be backing dancers in the club.
  • The costumes would be smart casual clothing, and the lead singer would wear trousers and a boob tube.
  • The narratives feature the singer getting ready to go out. then she goes to the club, and the rest of the video features abstract images of various shots on the night out.
  • the track is a club friendly song so we believe a club video would suit it best.

Pitch for Lady Gaga song

Here is a list of some ideas that we have if we were to get the song:

  • we would film quite a sad video with a black and white theme. it may be filmed in a bedroom, with pillows, curtains etc.
  • another idea is to film the video with lots of close ups of a woman in heavy monochrome makeup crying.
  • props and costume ideas: connor will be nude. heavy makeup and eccentric costumes that fit the song.
  • genre: pop/r&b slow.  This shot below of Lady Gaga is our inspiration.

Wednesday 14 September 2011

Second Song Choice - Rihanna Bubble Pop

Our second choice is Rihannas Bubble Pop, which will be filmed at a party, capturing shots of a house party with people parting, drinking etc. it will be filmed as a personal video, like being filmed on a mobile phone. the costumes will be what people are wearing at the party. these will be mixed with shots of a dance sequence featuring a lead singer as Rihanna. the shots would be sped up, including fast paced shots and would use a fisheye effect on these shots, to show a dark ring around the edge to give it texture. We would also use a darker feel on these shots.

Song choice - Lady Gaga - Second Time Around

We have chosen Lady Gaga's Second Time Around as our music video track. we have chosen this song because it is a slow sensual song and we think we could make a good music video with our ideas, which relate to the song, its lyrics and genre. The song is perfect for our group because Connor will be lady gaga, and we plan to have a monochrome feel to the video using grey tones, which fit in with the feel of the song. We plan to use a bedroom location for some of the scenes which show the artist laying on the bed and being filmed at different angles. the slow feel to the song makes it ideal for a slow video featuring interrelated with the rest of the video in between close-up shots of the singer. We will film the video scenes over and over, taking various different shots of the bed scenes and mixing them together. In between these shots will be a story-line featuring a woman crying in a mirror and breaking up with a boyfriend. the costumes.

Analysis of student music video - 2.

The second video we analyzed is this one.  we think this video is creative, and includes different shots including dancing, street shots and it genereally fits into the "strangeness" of the song. The video is unique in including little or no lip synching and including a lot of narrative and dance sequences. It includes many extras used in the dance shots in the video, and parts of it were also filmed on the streets. `the song itself is uptempo, but chilled back, and fits in with the genre behind the video.

Analysis of student videos - 1.

This video we find intresting, as it includes small parts of dialogue, many shots and fits into the stereotype of a typical rock video. The video, from a few years ago is filmed in a barn, which fits into the feel of the song, and it works with the video, which includes several shots of people destroying things, relating to the angry feel of the song. It also includes a rewind at the end of the song which also looks good and makes the video look diffrent and unique.
